Geology 101: Bowen’s reaction series This diagram shows what crystallizes out of a melt first so olivine is one of the first things to crystallize out and quartz being the last. Olivine is what the mantle is made up of and tends to be the first to weather out at the earths surface, while quartz being common on the crust is last to weather out.

Sorry for not posting for a whole life has thrown me some curve balls i.e. losing my Great Dane, her cancer became too painful for her. Anyways, the rock of this week is none other than Quartz! Or SiO2 the most common mineral on the earth surface! It’s found in a lot of other mineral formulas, that are also felsic rocks. I will explain this more in a separate post about this gradient/reaction series rocks go through :)

Ever heard of cleavage planes? 😈 Cleavage planes: are planes of weakness in the crystal structure that can be seen under microscope and to the naked eye. Due to the round shape of the thunder egg it’s hard to see any cleavage planes to the naked eye but if we focus on each individual mineral that’s when you can first spot them 👁
